The Environment Agency has announced plans to carry out land drainage improvement works on the River Ver in Verulamium Park, St Albans. These works, which fall under the agency's Permitted Development rights, will take place between Holywell Hill and west of Cottonmill Lane Allotments.

The proposed improvements include selective tree felling, floodplain reconnection, wetland creation, planting and seeding, and the installation of boardwalk sections for crossing the wetland areas. The aim is to enhance the ecological status of the river and provide environmental benefits.

The Environment Agency has determined that these works are unlikely to have significant environmental impacts and therefore does not plan to prepare an environmental statement. This decision is based on the small scale of the project, which covers a 3.5-hectare area along an 800-metre stretch of the river.

The construction period is expected to last up to three months, with no planned closures of public rights of way or roads. However, minor diversions will be implemented for informal footpaths. Access to the site will be from existing hardstanding areas to the west and south.

Located within the St Albans Conservation Area, the project is designed to enhance the area's character without impacting nearby Scheduled Monuments such as 'Verulamium, site of' and 'St Albans Abbey, site of conventual buildings'. Archaeological investigations have been conducted, indicating limited risk.
