Plymouth City Council has announced a proposal to remove four highway trees on Kings Road, Plymouth, as part of a scheme to install two new pedestrian crossings and speed humps. This initiative is under Section 96A of the Highways Act 1980. The removal is deemed necessary to maintain clear visibility of the proposed crossings and ensure adequate illumination of both the crossings and road humps.

The scheme aims to enhance safety for all road users on Kings Road, which has experienced two fatal and several serious collisions in recent years. In mitigation of the tree removal, the council plans to plant 19 new trees within the surrounding street and park areas. This includes a community orchard featuring 14 apple trees.

Those who have any concerns or believe they may be adversely impacted are encouraged to review the plans and additional information available on the Plymouth City Council website. Comments on the proposed order can be submitted in writing to the Service Director for Street Services (Plymouth Highways) at Ballard House, West Hoe Road, Plymouth, PL1 3BJ or online by quoting reference ‘Amd.2025.2137351 Kings Road’ by 23 January 2026.
