Devon County Council has announced several significant road traffic changes affecting the region. These include a proposed speed limit adjustment and multiple temporary road closures to facilitate essential infrastructure works.
A396 Stoke Canon Speed Limit Proposal
A new 40mph speed limit is proposed for a specified section of the A396 between Exeter and Stoke Canon. This change is part of efforts to enhance road safety under the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984. Interested parties can view the draft order and related documents at devon.cc/tro or at Devon Libraries during opening hours. Objections or comments must be submitted by 30 April 2026.
Temporary Road Closures in Exeter
Several roads in Exeter will experience temporary closures to accommodate necessary utility works:
- Archibald Road: Closed from 13 April 2026 to 15 May 2026 for lead pipe replacement by Kier on behalf of South West Water. No alternative route is available.
- Cleveland Street, Clinton Street & Oakfield Road: Closed from 15 April 2026 to 24 June 2026 for gas mains replacement by Wales & West Utilities. Alternative routes are signposted.
- Abbots Road: Scheduled closure from 4 May 2026 to 29 May 2026 for lead replacement works by South West Water. Alternative routes via Priory Road and Monkswell Road are provided.
These measures are deemed necessary to ensure the safe and efficient completion of infrastructure upgrades. Residents and commuters are advised to plan their journeys accordingly and contact the relevant utility companies for further information if needed.
