Devon County Council announces multiple traffic restrictions in Exeter
Temporary road closures and parking restrictions in Exeter from January 2026.

Devon County Council has announced a series of temporary traffic and parking restrictions across various roads in Exeter, set to commence from January 2026. These measures are being implemented under the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, Section 14, to facilitate essential infrastructure works.

High Street & Queen Street

From 12 January 2026, High Street and Queen Street will be closed to through traffic and parking from the junction of North Street to the junction of Queen Street. This closure is necessary for replacing the existing roof on a complex manhole. The anticipated completion date is 1 February 2026. Alternative routes will be signposted via South Street, Magdalen Street, Western Way, and Paris Street.

Drakes Road

Starting 5 February 2026, Drakes Road will be closed with no alternative route available. This closure is required for a lead replacement scheme by Kier on behalf of South West Water, expected to finish by 17 February 2026.

Cornwall Street

Cornwall Street will also see a closure from 2 February to 15 February 2026 for lead replacement works. No alternative route is provided.

Barton Road

The one-way system on Barton Road will be suspended from 4 February to 4 March 2026 to allow lead replacements aimed at resolving water quality issues.

Shaftesbury Road

Shaftesbury Road will be closed from Barton Road to Old Vicarage Road starting 4 February until 4 March 2026. Diversions will be in place via Barton Road, Duckworth Road, and Old Vicarage Road.

Cedars Road

Cedars Road will experience a closure from 12 January to 15 March 2026 for lead replacement works with no alternative route available.

Brunswick Street

Brunswick Street will be closed from 12 January to 2 February 2026 for lead pipe replacement. Vehicles can follow the signed diversion via Buller Road and Cambridge Street.

A379 - A3015 Rydon Lane & S-bound Slip Road

From 2 February to 7 March 2026, these roads will have night-time closures between 6:30pm and 7am for resurfacing and other maintenance works. Diversions will guide traffic via Middlemoor Roundabout and Countess Wear Roundabout.

Clifton Hill

Clifton Hill will be closed from 3 February to 27 February 2026 for lining works and traffic calming installations. The diversion route includes Belmont Road and Heavitree Road.

Birchy Barton Hill

Parking restrictions will apply on Birchy Barton Hill from 2 February to 13 April 2026 as old gas mains are replaced with new plastic mains by Wales & West Utilities.

Residents and commuters are advised to plan their journeys accordingly and follow the signed diversions where applicable. For further details or concerns regarding these restrictions, contact Devon County Council or the respective contractors as listed in the public notice.
