In recent developments, two significant licensing applications have been submitted in the towns of Ware and Cheshunt. These applications are under the Licensing Act 2003, which governs activities such as the sale of alcohol and public entertainment.

Axe & Compasses, Ware

Tavern Propco Limited has applied for a new premises licence for Axe & Compasses located at 28 The Street, Ware, SG11 2QR. The application seeks permission to supply alcohol both on and off the premises from Monday to Saturday with table meals between 10am to midnight, and without meals until 11pm. On Sundays, alcohol can be supplied with meals from noon to 11:30pm, and without meals until 10:30pm. Additionally, late-night refreshments are proposed until midnight on weekdays and until 11:30pm on Sundays. Recorded music is also included in the application with timings set from 10am to 11:30pm on weekdays and from noon to 11pm on Sundays.

The application is essentially a renewal on a like-for-like basis with a recently expired licence. Interested parties can inspect the application at East Herts District Council Offices by appointment during weekdays. Representations must be submitted by November 6, 2026.

Cheshunt Food Center

GHD Group Limited has applied for a full variation of the premises licence for Cheshunt Food Center at 16 Newnham Parade, Cheshunt, EN8 9NU. The proposed changes include extending opening hours from Monday to Sunday between 7am to 1am and allowing off-sale of alcohol from 8am to midnight daily. On New Year's Eve, off-sales will extend until 1am the following day. The application also includes variations to the premises plans.

The application can be inspected at the Borough of Broxbourne Council offices or online. Objections or representations must be made by November 4, 2026.

Community Impact

These applications could have various impacts on their respective communities. Economic benefits might arise from increased patronage at these venues. However, local residents may have concerns about potential noise or extended operating hours affecting their quality of life.

Those who have any concerns or believe they may be adversely impacted are encouraged to make representations within the specified deadlines.
